Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which carries the nerve and blood supply. When deep decay, a crack or an old leaking filling lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. That is the throbbing, keeps-you-awake-at-night pain most people associate with a “nerve” problem.
Root canal treatment removes that infected pulp, cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the roots, disinfects them and seals them with an inert filling material. The tooth stays in your mouth and keeps doing its job. The alternative — pulling the tooth out — leaves a gap that then needs an implant or a bridge, which costs considerably more.
Does a root canal hurt?
This is the question we are asked most. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia with rotary instruments, so the treatment itself is comfortable — many patients are surprised that the pain stops the moment the pulp is removed. Any tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal and settles with ordinary painkillers.
Why a crown is recommended afterwards
A root-treated back tooth has lost its internal blood supply and a lot of its structure, which makes it brittle. A crown (cap) placed over it takes the chewing load and stops it splitting. Skipping the crown is the single most common reason a successful root canal fails later.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) — common questions
No. It is done under local anaesthesia and for most patients it actually relieves the pain they came in with. Mild tenderness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Most straightforward cases can. Teeth with an active abscess or badly curved canals sometimes need a second visit so the infection can settle properly.
On back teeth, yes. A root-treated tooth is brittle and a crown protects it from splitting under chewing load. Not capping it is the commonest cause of failure later.
A properly treated and crowned tooth can last a lifetime. Success rates are well over 90 percent when the tooth is restored promptly.
