Teeth Cleaning & Polishing (Scaling)

A crown — most people call it a cap — is a custom-made cover that sits over a tooth that is too broken down to hold an ordinary filling. It restores the shape, the bite and the appearance of the tooth, and takes the chewing load off the weakened structure underneath.
We fit crowns after root canal treatment, on teeth with large old fillings that keep chipping, on badly worn-down teeth, and on implants. A bridge is the same idea extended across a gap: crowns on the teeth either side support a replacement tooth in the middle, so the gap is closed without surgery.
Metal-ceramic crowns are strong and cost-effective and remain a good choice for back teeth. Full-ceramic and zirconia crowns transmit light the way enamel does, so they are the natural choice for front teeth and for anyone who does not want a metal line showing at the gum. We will show you the options and what each costs at the consultation rather than deciding for you.
Typically 10 to 15 years, and often longer. Lifespan depends far more on how well you clean around the gum line than on the material itself.
Ceramic and zirconia crowns are shade matched to the teeth on either side. On front teeth we check the shade with you in daylight before the crown is cemented.
A bridge is quicker and does not need surgery, but the teeth on either side have to be trimmed to carry it. An implant leaves those teeth untouched. We will explain which suits your case.
Preparing the tooth is done under local anaesthesia. Fitting the finished crown at the second visit usually needs no anaesthetic at all.
