Plaque that is not brushed away hardens within days into tartar (calculus), which is bonded to the tooth and cannot be removed by brushing at home. Tartar is porous and holds bacteria right against the gum, which is how gum disease starts.
Ultrasonic scaling uses high-frequency vibration and a water spray to break the deposits off without scratching the enamel. Polishing afterwards smooths the surface so plaque takes longer to build up again, and removes surface stains from tea, coffee, paan and tobacco.
Most adults benefit from a cleaning every six months. It is also the single cheapest dental appointment you will ever have, and the one that prevents the expensive ones.
No. Ultrasonic scalers vibrate the deposit off the tooth; the tip is not sharp and does not cut enamel. The myth comes from the sensitivity some people feel afterwards, which is the newly exposed root surface, not damage.
Tartar was insulating the exposed root. Once it is removed the root is briefly sensitive to cold. It usually settles within a week, and a desensitising toothpaste helps.
Every six months for most people; every three to four months if you have gum disease, diabetes, or you smoke.
It removes surface stains, so teeth usually look noticeably brighter. It does not change the underlying natural shade — that needs whitening.
