Professional whitening uses a controlled-strength gel applied to the enamel under a protective barrier that shields the gums. In a single sitting most patients go several shades lighter. A take-home kit with custom trays is also available if you prefer to whiten gradually.
Whitening works on natural tooth structure. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings, so if you have visible restorations on your front teeth we will plan the order of treatment — whiten first, then match the new restorations to the lighter shade.
Before whitening, any decay and gum inflammation has to be treated and the teeth cleaned, otherwise the result is patchy and the sensitivity is much worse. We check all of that at the consultation.
